All adults need to be aware of the risk factors for developing Type 2 diabetes. It doesn't matter if you think you are currently at risk of developing the condition or not. Sometimes it's essential to go back to the basics. Many of the risk factors for Type 2 diabetes are widely known due to how common the disease has become in modern times. A brief but comprehensive discussion of these risk factors should provide some valuable insight. Let's split the risk factors into two groups: uncontrollable and controllable... 1. Uncontrollable... Age: 45 is widely recognized as the age where your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes increases substantially. Don't be fooled by the number, though. This form of diabetes can and most definitely starts in some individuals still in their 30's. Family History: If you have a parent or sibling with Type 2 diabetes, your chances of developing the condition increases. Ethnicity: Hispanics, African-Americans, and some Natives and Asians are generally speaking more susceptible to Type 2 diabetes. 2. Controllable... Quick note: controllable factors play a more pivotal role in determining whether or not you will be a diabetic. Prediabetes: If your blood sugar levels are significantly higher than the healthy baseline level, diabetes itself may be in your future High Blood Pressure: "The silent killer," hypertension, can lead to and make worse complications associated with Type 2 diabetes. High Blood Cholesterol: Particularly when LDL cholesterol levels are high and HDL cholesterol values are below healthy readings. Obesity: Whether you are classified as being overweight or obese is irrelevant. The fact of the matter is if you are above a healthy weight for your stature, your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes increases exponentially. As far as your health and well-being are concerned, nothing goes as planned when you're overweight. In fact, all of the controllable risk factors we just listed above are more likely to occur or exacerbate in the presence of obesity. Being overweight is by far the most prevalent risk factor for developing Type 2 diabetes. Physical Inactivity: Last but not least is physical inactivity. When you're sedentary, all of the components above are aggravated. It's unlikely to see a physically active individual who is obese. On the other hand, practically everyone who is overweight is physically inactive. Two other controllable risk factors deserve an honorable mention: smoking and stress. It goes without saying you should eliminate these elements in your life if they apply to you. With a healthy lifestyle, even with certain odds against you, you can live a good life free of high blood sugar levels, being overweight and carrying excess fat around your abdominal area, and Type 2 diabetes. Although managing your disease can be very challenging, Type 2 diabetes is not a condition you must just live with. You can make simple changes to your daily routine and lower both your weight and your blood sugar levels. Hang in there, the longer you do it, the easier it gets.
