Obesity is a known risk factor for Gestational, or pregnancy-related diabetes as well as to a Type 2 diabetes diagnosis. Gestational and other forms of diabetes are known for being health hazards both to expectant mothers and their baby. Researchers at University Children's Hospital in Dusseldorf and a number of other research facilities in Germany looked at nondiabetic pregnancies in obese mothers. The aim was to learn whether slightly high blood sugar levels could also be associated with similar health problems. Their study, reported on in August 2015 in the journal Clinical Chemistry, included 462 mothers and their infants. All tested negative for Gestational diabetes... a total of 155 were of normal weight, and 307 were obese. Of the normal weight women... 12 percent had slightly high HbA1c levels of at least 5.7 percent. Among the obese women... almost 32 percent showed HbA1c at similar slightly high levels. Infants born to obese women with slightly elevated HbA1c levels were 3.56 times as likely to be born overweight as were babies from lean women. From these results, it was concluded elevated HbA1c levels in obese expectant mothers without Gestational diabetes are a matter of concern and should be monitored. They recommend measurement of HbA1c at delivery. Are obese expectant mothers with HbA1c levels of 5.7 percent or higher at risk for developing Type 2 diabetes after delivery, as are women diagnosed with Gestational diabetes? More research will undoubtedly tell. In the meantime... normalizing weight, taking in sufficient amounts of nutrients in healthy foods, and having adequate physical activity are good for both the expectant mother and her baby. Nutritionally dense foods are those high in nutrients and low in calories... fruits, vegetables, nuts, and whole grains are considered nutritionally dense. They are important to normalize weight for mothers and their baby to provide all their nutritional needs. Food cravings can be caused by nutritional insufficiencies, so taking in plenty of nutrients is important for weight management as well as adequate growth and development. prenatal supplementation with a wide range of vitamins as well as calcium, magnesium, and iron are usually prescribed and should be taken faithfully every day. a wide range of dark green, yellow, red, and other colorful vegetables and fruits will ensure a wide range of vitamins, minerals, and healthful phytonutrients, or plant molecules. A morning walk or light exercise every day is good for... controlling weight, staying in shape for delivery, and keeping a positive outlook. Expectant mothers need to stay on schedule with their prenatal visits - treatment of Gestational diabetes and/or high HbA1c levels halves the expectant mother's risk for delivering an excessively large baby. Although managing your disease can be very challenging, Type 2 diabetes is not a condition you must just live with. You can make simple changes to your daily routine and lower both your weight and your blood sugar levels. Hang in there, the longer you do it, the easier it gets.
