It is well-established anyone who has received a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes is also at a high risk of developing heart and blood vessel disease. Researchers at the Catholic University of Korea, in Seoul, Republic of Korea, looked at the possibility heart attack patients could also be at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Their study reported on in PLOS ONE a peer-reviewed open access scientific journal published by the Public Library of Science in August 2015, included 2,036 heart patients who had been tested for having had a heart attack. None had Type 2 diabetes at the time of enrollment. By the end of 12 months, the people who had a heart attack were 78 percent more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes than those people who had not had a heart attack. From the results, it was concluded people who have had a heart attack are at risk for developing Type 2 diabetes. How to avoid having a heart attack and, in the process, lower the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes? Fortunately, prevention is the same for both conditions. Eating lots of healthful food, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes, provide nutrients and fiber without high-calorie counts and saturated fats. Speaking of saturated fats, try substituting olive, canola, flaxseed, or grape seed oil for butter or margarine. A good rule of thumb is if it's liquid at room temperature it's better than solid fat. Want something sweet? How does watermelon or apricot sound? Make a fruit salad with your favorite melons and berries. Do some comparison shopping. Which are less expensive - blueberries or chocolate cake? Have the berries and save money as well as getting some good antioxidants and fewer calories. Save the cake for your birthday and you'll appreciate it more. Getting enough physical activity is another healthy idea. Some experts say the best exercise is the one you will regularly do, so find something you like. Who doesn't like to dance? Find some time to be alone in the house. Send the family off on some errands. Lock the doors, close the curtains, turn on some music and dance a striptease. Continue dancing, moving all you want, for as long as it takes your family to return from their shopping trip. Take a shower, get dressed, and feel virtuous for keeping up your exercise program. Tell them you performed your calisthenics the whole time they were gone and they will be impressed. Here's to having fun and staying healthy. Although managing your disease can be very challenging, Type 2 diabetes is not a condition you must just live with. You can make simple changes to your daily routine and lower both your weight and your blood sugar levels. Hang in there, the longer you do it, the easier it gets.
